How and Why to Use Lecithin in Edibles?
Lecithin is an emulsifier. It binds all of the ingredients together. If you do not use lecithin, your ingredients will not bind as they should. It increases the absorbs of the cannabinoids. This allows your body to metabolize more of the terpenes and cannabinoids. This will affect your edibles. It also improves the shelf life of your ingredients.
When to Use Lecithin
Lecithin is an amazing product to use when making cannabis capsules, simple syrup, powder, cannabutter, canna oil and much more.
Three Types of Lecithin
You can buy lecithin in three unique forms. The forms of lecithin are granular, powder, and liquid. The liquid form of lecithin comes from sunflowers. I recommend using the liquid lecithin for all of your edibles. You are welcome to do your own research when choosing the type of lecithin, you use for your edibles.
How to Use Lecithin
1- Before adding lecithin, remember to decarb your cannabis by adding it to a mason jar with a lid. Set your oven temperature to 240° F. Place the closed jar into the oven for around 30-40 minutes.
2- After you have decarbed your cannabis, choose a carrier oil. You can choose either coconut oil, butter, olive oil, hemp oil, etcetera. Since cannabis is fat-soluble, you’ll need to make sure to add fat. This is where your carrier oil comes in. This will bind with the THC and CBD. After you choose your fat, go ahead, and add 1 cup to your cannabis.
3- Once you add your carrier oil to your cannabis, it is time for you to add the lecithin. Use 1 teaspoon of lecithin per 1-2 cup of carrier oil.
4- You are now ready to infuse your cannabis. If you would like to use the mason jar method, turn your stovetop on low to medium heat, place the mason jar into a medium-sized pot that is filled with water halfway. Allow the mason jar to simmer for a minimum of 2 hours. If you do not have a mason jar, you can choose to use a double boiler method. Fill a pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature. Once the temperature is reduced, and the water has stopped boiling, add a glass bowl to the top of the pot.
- ● Pour in the carrier oil.
- ● Once the oil is melted, sprinkle in the cannabis
- ● Stir in 1 teaspoon of lecithin.
- ● Let your ingredients simmer for a minimum of 2 hours
- ● Next using a cheesecloth, you will filter your cannabis. Place the cheesecloth over abowl, and pour the cooked ingredients over the cloth to strain it
TIP- Always remember to add your lecithin AFTER adding the carrier oil to your cannabis.
Lecithin is an awesome way to bind your ingredients together. It helps your ingredients to last longer. Lecithin is also known to help with digestion, lower cholesterol, and improve the health of your heart. It can also contribute to better memory retention.
